Why do we celebrate Memorial day?
Memorial day is a US federal holiday which takes place every year on the final Monday of May. It celebrates our history and the struggle it took us to get where we are today, honoring men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. It used to be known as Decoration Day, originating after the American Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Unofficially it marks the beginning of the summer vacation, while Labor Day marks its end (1st Monday in September of each year).
Is Memorial the same as Veterans day?
Memorial Day is different from Veterans Day. Memorial day remembers the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, living or dead.
What do we do on Memorial day?
Many Americans visit cemeteries and memorials on this Memorial Day to honor those who have died in military service, placing flowers and American flags on graves and in parks. This holiday also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family gatherings, trips to the beach and participation in parades.
What are some ideas to make it an excellent experience?
- Visit a park: Going to local parks, having lunch or get togethers with family and friends is a lot of fun and helps your holiday budget at the same time. At some parks you can even have BBQs, to which you can easily bring food and drinks.
- Go to the beach: If you’re lucky and live near a beach, you can plan a day trip or even make it a weekend holiday, as the weather is usually mild and pleasant at that time of the year.
- Go camping: For the campers among you, this is an adventurous way to celebrate Memorial Day. You can use a camper or a tent, or just sleep under the stars in your sleeping bag. If you’re going to a lake or river, why not try some fishing?!
- Attend a parade: Many cities have parades parties and other events honoring Memorial Day. Check your city’s website or local newspapers for more information.
