The year is coming to an end and that means the holiday break is approaching. Most American students go home to visit with their families, but many International Students stay in the U.S. as oversea travel can be costly. Being away from home can make the distance between loved ones greater, but don’t frown, there are a lot of things to do to combat seasonal homesickness!
We at peerTransfer have come up with a few tips and tricks on taking advantage of being in the States during the holiday break and make the most out of it!
Take a trip
Team up with fellow International Students and plan trip! You could do a road trip and go skiing up North, visit New York City to appreciate the gigantic Christmas Tree at the Rockefeller Center and go ice skating in Central Park, or go south and get a tan at one of Florida’s amazing beaches.
Share your culture
You may get invited to spend the holidays with an American friend of yours, and International students will definitely learn from the experiences with their American friends, but it is also nice to show your friends what and how you celebrate in your culture at home!
Do something different
Holiday season is the time of giving. Why not try something like helping out at a homeless shelter for a day? It is a fun experience that you can do with friends, and helping those in need can be quite rewarding as well. Check out local shelters for more information!
Do the things you haven’t had time for all year
Look back at those new year’s resolutions and see if there’s anything that you haven’t done! Maybe you wanted to try out a new indoor sport? Go to a museum, create a piece of art? Whatever it is you want to cross off your bucket list, now is a great time to do it!
You’re not alone
Remember there are plenty of other International Students who are in the same boat as you! Check with them and see what you can do together. Have a bake off or cook off, explore your college town together, watch classic movies or do some holiday shopping J
